恐怖小说改编

　　游戏的剧情改编于美国知名恐怖小说作家H.P.Lovecraft的同名小说，并以“Call of Cthulhu”及“The Shadow Over Insmouth”这两个故事为基础加以融合。故事发生在20世纪初期，主角杰克·沃尔特由于家庭关系不得不选择了警察这个职业，在那里他表现得非常出色，很快成为了人人敬仰的模范。一天，接到上头的命令，调查一座和某个宗教团体有关系的房子，万万没想到的是，这座房子里竟然隐藏着许多骇人听闻的秘密。他看到这个世界中本应不存在的生物，因此精神错乱。痊愈之后，他回到了印吻岛上的新英格兰城，但他还没有完成调查发生在这座小镇周围的奇异事件的任务，这让他时时刻刻都在感到困扰，玩家将协助他完成这个离奇的任务。

创新的健康系统

　　绝大部分游戏的健康系统只有生命一项，而且不会因生命力的减少而限制人物的行动，这完全缺乏真实性。在CoC中，大家将会看到一个令人惊叹的健康系统，在冒险过程中，你可能会听到一些神秘的声音，它会使你产生幻觉而无法看到真实的场景；如果你被打伤一条腿，你将不得不跛着前进；如果你被打伤一只手，它将会大大降低你的射击命中率；如果你走到一个寒冷的地方，你行进的时候会不停的颤抖，甚至会感冒；毒药会让你精力变弱，随便一个创伤可能会导致死亡。幸运的是，玩家可以利用当时的医疗装置来治疗多数的伤害，那些医疗包在很多场景都有，有些被隐藏在很难发现的地方，玩家最好每个角落都去一次。这个系统的确出色，但遗憾的是，它会使游戏可玩性大打折扣，一但受伤就会使游戏难度加大，这将让杰克更充分地感受到临近死亡的恐惧。

与恶魔战斗

　　在游戏中，会遇到许多需要仔细探索的诡异地点，途中会遇到不少未知的生物，其中包括了穿过时间隧道而来的异域访客，居住在深水中，骚扰当地渔民的恐怖生物，这些鬼魅魍魉会打乱你的理智思维，并导致各种附带效应，比如幻觉，妄想，以及眩晕感。面对着这些生物，玩家可以拿起武器与之战斗，但武器都是连发左轮手枪、毛瑟枪之类，根本不能对抗强大的敌人，玩家可以利用地点的优势，找到一个最好的位置打击敌人，据说游戏某个角落隐藏着一把神秘的武器，它可以帮助玩家解决那些烦人的生物。如果玩家遇到那些无法击败的生物，可以选择逃跑，只要与对方拉开一定距离，对方就不会继续追击。为了让玩家更好地进行游戏，遇到新事物，杰克会写下日记，间接告诉玩家已经触发了新剧情。

　　CoC的制作已经经历了几个年头，其间因为原来的发行商遭遇经济困境，所以它发行的日子也被一再拖延。尽管由此导致了这款游戏的图像核心落后于其它作品，但它的设计者们创造性地利用了各种技术，为它的视觉效果做出了令人满意的改进。谁想体验一下恐怖，那就来CoC吧，它绝对会让你充分享受到来自黑暗的恐惧。■
